As the former chair of the No Committee, I wrote several letters to The Post in January and February 2020.

At the time, I was alarmed at the gigantism of the project and the fact that it had been decided behind closed doors for 3 years. I called for a compromise, stating that most citizens agreed for the construction of the centre, but it did not have to be so oversized for a population of 20,000.
The loan, $27.8 million, seemed excessive, and so was the total cost of the project evaluated at that time at $48.7 million.
When I asked the mayor to have access to grants from the council in order to organise the No campaign, he refused point blank. As a result, we had to dip into our own pockets to the tune of a few thousand dollars, in order to print some leaflets. Hardly a democratic exercise. Meanwhile the council spent $250,000 to support the Yes campaign.
Despite this unfair situation, we managed to gather 42% of the vote.
We now learn that the bids have come in. One of them is for $88 million and the other $94 million.
What a mess.
