Press release Town of Mount-Royal
Every year around April 22, Mount Royal is witness to various environmental initiatives celebrating Earth Day. Spring 2021 is no exception, with the Town Council implementing its first Urban Agriculture Policy—adopted at the regular meeting on April 19. The policy was inspired by the widespread interest in food autonomy when the pandemic hit a year ago and also by our garden city’s rich horticultural history. A survey of residents was integral to fine-tuning its content. The document adopted this month highlights private vegetable gardens and the increasing number of edible plants in the Town’s urban green spaces, among a raft of other initiatives.
To mark the launch of its new Urban Agriculture Policy (available online), the Town will be distributing 500 vegetable garden starter kits free of charge, including four herb plant varieties. Only one kit per address, Mount Royal residents only. Residents can register and request a kit via Eventbrite this week through a notice on the homepage of the Town’s website (www.ville.mont-royal.qc.ca).
Earth Day: 50 azalea plants to be won
In addition to the herb starter kit, the Town will be running a separate contest offering a Golden Lights azalea shrub, from the Rhododendron family, to the first 50 residents registered. Only one shrub per address, Mount Royal residents only. To request an azalea shrub, residents can once again register via Eventbrite through a notice on the homepage of the Town’s website this week (www.ville.mont-royal.qc.ca).
