While the first season of BIXI in Montreal dates back to the spring of 2009, in the garden city, the arrival of self-service bicycles took place ten years later. In 2019, the Town of Mount Royal had two stations for a total of 20 bikes.

In 2021, while Quebec paid more than $6.5 million for the expansion of this bike-sharing system, the City obtained financial assistance of $34,531 for the installation of a 5th BIXI station in the Rockland sector. BIXI bikes should leave their winter quarters during the month of April, to the delight of bix users, who are more and more numerous. Last year, the number of new users increased by 326% compared to 2020 and by 195% compared to the peak year of 2019, according to data from the non-profit organization BIXI Montreal. In 2021, the network included 7,270 regular bikes and 1,905 electric bikes in Montreal, as well as in Westmount, Montreal East, Mount Royal, Longueuil and Laval. With a total of 763 stations, 153 of which are electric, Montreal has the largest fleet of electric bicycles in Canada and one of the largest in North America. Electrically-assisted BIXIs and dual-mode electrical stations are the result of Quebec know-how.

Mohawk Park will once again host this outdoor fair bringing together young and old. On the menu: pastries, sweets, lemonade, games for children, entertainment and many surprises. The 2022 edition of the Kiosque, presented by Dr Normand Bach, orthodontist, and Sebastien Kadian, real estate broker at Engel & Völkers, will be colorful. Further details will be posted on social media channels (Facebook and Instagram) over the coming months. The best way to keep up to date with news is to subscribe to one of these accounts.

During the pandemic, the metabolic and cardiovascular health of children will not have taken a break. It is therefore important as a community to mobilize once again to ensure that we can provide the best care for the children of the CHU Sainte-Justine. Townies are therefore invited to join the organizers on Wednesday, June 8 (postponed to the next day in case of rain) to help them achieve their goal.

“SATURDAYS ON ICE” POSTPONED… TO SUNDAY

The formula for the traditional “Family Fun” activity has been adapted to life in times of a pandemic this year. Instead of one large gathering, the event will instead take place over three Saturdays in February. However, given the weather, the party that was to be held tomorrow, February 12, at Danyluk Park, has been postponed to Sunday, February 13.

"Saturdays on the Ice"
As the name of the activity suggests, you need ice to skate. But with the mercury on the rise in recent days, the ice conditions are proving impassable and the rinks at Danyluk Park are therefore closed for the time being.

However, by consulting the weather forecast, "we are 95% sure that Sunday afternoon we will have ice," commented Chris Mandelos of the City's Recreation Department. The party, which could be renamed “Sunday on the ice” for the occasion, should therefore take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with background music, mascots and clowns. Between two strokes, it will also be possible to warm up around a campfire, roast marshmallows, or even drink hot chocolate.

If the weather cooperates, the next two Saturdays of winter family fun are scheduled for February 19 at Connaught Park and February 26 at Mohawk Park.

An “ambitious” environmental plan

This Monday, September 27, Town of Mount-Royal launched its fourth local sustainable development plan. According to Mayor Philippe Roy, the 2021-2025 plan will be the most ambitious that the city has decided to put in place.

This will be the last program the mayor initiates. Philippe Roy will not renew his mandate. "I started and finished with the subject that will have animated me for all these years", confides the one who had been responsible in 2005 for the establishment of the first quadrennial plan of the municipality.

Among the 52 planned actions, the mayor underlines certain priorities. At a time when 10 to 12% of homes still use fuel oil, the city is committed to banning this heating system. Town of Mount-Royal is also following Montreal's actions and will soon implement a ban on single-use plastic as well as the use of glyphosate and 35 other targeted pesticides.

The latest sustainable development plans have brought many benefits to the city. The means implemented in an urban forest project have enabled the planting and maintenance of no less than 4,000 trees. The shift in the management of recycling and composting carried out about ten years ago has allowed a considerable reduction in the amount of waste produced by households.

The mayor says that between 75 and 80% of the targets set by each program have been achieved. Recalling the environmental disasters that have multiplied around the world this summer, he recalls that it is no longer a question of prevention but of living with climate change. It invites citizens to do their part, to consider their modes of travel differently or to plant more trees in private yards. "We are asking them to embark on this battle which is really important," insists Philippe Roy.
