In a brief statement that reached the office of the Station Mont-Royal newspaper today (June 1, 2022), Mrs. Maryam Kamali Nezhad, sworn in November 2021 as municipal councilor representing district No 2, informs us of her dissociation of Team Peter Malouf, and of her intention to sit as an independent councilor from now on. We publish here, in its entirety, the declaration received from Mrs. Kamali Nezhad, dated May 31, 2022.

Maryam Kamali Nezhad sworn in to the Town of Mount Royal in November 2021

I hereby announce that I dissociate myself from Team Peter Malouf and declare myself Independent. Elected since November 7, 2021 as a municipal councillor in the Town of Mount Royal in District No. 2, I have decided to sit on Council as an Independent. The main reason for my decision is to keep my independent voice on Council to better defend the interests of the Town and the citizens who trusted me by voting for me during the last election.

There are many critical issues facing the City that require professional and timely action. In order to be very transparent with my constituents and with the entire community, I would like to mention that I do not share the opinions and positions on many of these issues with Team Peter Malouf. By sitting as an independent councillor, I hope to be able to better serve the Mount Royal community and I am eager to represent the interests of citizens on the Town of Mount Royal's municipal council.

I would like to thank all citizens of Mount-Royal for their trust and support in achieving this goal.

Maryam Kamali Nezhad

Mayor wants to delay the dismantling of the footbridge

TMR Press release

The Mayor of the Town of Mount Royal, Peter Malouf, deplores the lack of consideration of the authorities of the REM towards the population of Mount Royal by refusing to maintain, at least until the end of the school year, the temporary pedestrian bridge that allows for the safe crossing of the future REM tracks.

Although mayor Malouf has officially made a written request to the administrators Jean-Marc Arbaud and Harout Chitilian of CDPQ Infra, a subsidiary of the Caisse de dépôt et placement and manager of the REM project, they have evidently refused to delay the demolition of the footbridge for a few months and have agreed to the removal of the structure as of December 14.

A premature decision by REM questioned
Given the crowded construction site on the Cornwall Bridge, the demolition of the temporary footbridge located at the intersection of Morrison and Melbourne avenues is being done far too hastily and is putting the population at risk, particularly families, seniors and the many young schoolchildren who use it every day to cross to either side of the tracks. The work on the Cornwall Bridge is far from complete. Cars and heavy trucks are already on the bridge, but the many obstacles in the path of pedestrians make crossing the bridge unnecessarily dangerous and risky. It is in this context that Mayor Malouf stands up to assert the right to safety for the citizens of Mount Royal and reiterates his request to the management of the REM to reconsider their hasty decision and to maintain the footbridge at least until the end of the school year.

‘’It seems incredible to me, why risk an avoidable accident?" says Mayor Malouf. The structure of the temporary pedestrian bridge is already in place, the costs are already absorbed. If REM wants to save a few dollars on a multi-billion dollar project, I don't think it should be on something that could jeopardize the safety of our residents and their families.’’

Mayor Malouf expresses in his own way the frustration that characterizes the citizens of the Garden City. By postponing the dismantling of the temporary pedestrian bridge for only a few months, the REM is offering itself the chance to redeem its reputation with the population of Mount Royal, which has been held hostage and stigmatized since day 1 by all the construction work surrounding the arrival of the REM.

‘’I am amazed that after all that has been reported in the media, the management of the REM does not have more at heart the quality of life of citizens, whether here in TMR or elsewhere in other municipalities along the future route. The operations in the communities impacted by their presence are far from respecting the governance, safety, environmental and social responsibility commitments announced with great fanfare on their website. Additionally, it is frustrating to know that in the end, the money from the citizens' wallets with which the Caisse finances the REM is used as a weapon against them and not to improve their well-being. But they can still show that they are capable of goodwill, good citizenship and doing the right thing by leaving in place the temporary pedestrian bridge installed at the intersection of Morrison and Melbourne avenues, at least until the end of the school year," concluded Mayor Peter Malouf.

POSTPONED MUNICIPAL COUNCIL MEETING

The regular council meeting scheduled for November 22 has been postponed to Tuesday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. in Schofield Hall at Town Hall. Here's why.

PHOTO STATION MONT-ROYAL ARCHIVES

With the municipal election on November 7, "the first meeting of the city council came too quickly," admits the city clerk, Alexandre Verdy at the outset. “There are recount requests right now, so before I start training, I need to have the results of the recounts. "

Regardless of the recounts, there will be nine new people, including the mayor-elect, Peter Malouf, with no experience in municipal politics around the city council table soon. How will it work?

“As you go,” says Verdy. "For my part, I will first train them on our decision-making system (IT). We will provide them with computers, then I will explain to them how it works; how I send them documentation for decision making, etc. But after, the learning will be done gradually. "

“I imagine that when there is a first zoning change in caucus, I'll take half an hour to walk them through the zoning change process. But otherwise, there are so many things…. that it's like impossible [to know everything all at once. ] You would have to sit with them for three weeks and stuff their heads, which would be counterproductive, " he comments.

On the other hand, "when there is a new elected official on a board, there is a legal obligation to take training in ethics and professional conduct," he would like to clarify. "The latter is not given by the City, but externally. "

Public Security Agents In-House

MUNICIPAL LIFE

Press release Town of Mount-Royal

Unlike employees in other Town of Mount Royal departments, Public Security agents have until now been retained through renewable contracts with security agencies rather than being part of municipal staff. Starting this month, this will be a thing of the past as agents will join the ranks of other Town employees for the first time and enjoy the associated benefits. The latest contract expires on July 20, meaning the end of Public Security’s ties with GardaWorld.

The Town’s decision was driven by ongoing staff attraction and retention issues in recent years. The growth and increasing complexity of Public Security services required significant resources to train new agents at a time when the turnover rate of this position sat around 70% due to the general instability of the labour market and realities of the security industry. Given the ever-closing cost gap between outsourcing and managing staff internally, the Town of Mount Royal opted for a change of model.

This shift in hiring practices will allow Mount Royal Public Security to improve the stability of its teams and ensure its agents, officers and dispatchers can offer a more comprehensive service for garden city residents.

This summer, Espace pour la vie (Biodome, Insectarium, Botanical Garden, etc.) is reaching out to celebrate nature with citizens in the parks and other public spaces across the agglomeration. A team will be at Mount Royal’s Dakin Park from 11:00 to 15:00 on Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27.

Dakin Park lends itself to this type of activity. Apart from its impressive living sculpture, made of Miyabe willow, the park has also been home to a pollinating insect hotel, as well as a butterfly garden. PHOTOS STATION MONT-ROYAL ARCHIVE

Throughout the summer, Espace pour la vie teams will be facilitating observation and exploration in people’s everyday natural environments which often go unnoticed. Like tour guides in an art gallery, science educators will encourage people to take a closer look at the life around them. The artworks featured in this open-air museum are plants, mammals, birds, insects, minerals, weather and night sky—a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with nature in these spaces brimming with life.

Having undergone various improvements in recent years, Dakin Park lends itself perfectly to this type of activity. Apart from its impressive living sculpture, made of Miyabe willow, the park has also been home to a pollinating insect hotel since 2018, as well as a butterfly garden, a flower bed planted with milkweed, verbena, echinacea and buddleia, where you can admire monarchs, painted ladies, mourning cloaks and hummingbird moths.

While young science enthusiasts take part in the “Espace pour la vie near you” activities, families can also enjoy the park’s water games, which are sure to delight the younger members of the household.
